The CR-V Takes the Road: The Past

Recognizing the demand from consumers for a reliable compact crossover SUV, Honda delivered in full with the CR-V, which stands for “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle” or, in Britain, “Compact Recreational Vehicle.” The Honda CR-V first debuted in Japan in 1995 and eventually made its way to American streets in 1997, where it was instantly recognizable with its all-plastic front and rear bumper, fender wells, and front grille. The first-generation model was only available in the LX trim and boasted a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood that delivered 126 horsepower.

With the CR-V becoming the best-selling compact SUV in the American market, Honda set out to make the vehicle even better with its second generation. Debuting in 2002, the second-generation offered even more power with a 2.4-liter engine that delivered 160 horsepower. Other upgrades included the latest technology and safety features, making it one of the most advanced and safest SUVs on the road.

The CR-V underwent another facelift in 2004 with aesthetic updates ranging from modified taillights and a front grille to interior audio controls and the addition of XM satellite radio. In 2007, the CR-V delivered even more power thanks to a complete redesign that offered drivers three trim options—LX, EX, EX-L—with a progressive list of features from full power accessories to a moonroof, navigation, and rear-view camera. Honda also enhanced the CR-V’s standard safety suite to include stability control, brake assist, tire-pressure monitoring, and antilock disc brakes.

With the CR-V becoming Honda’s best-selling vehicle in the lineup, the CR-V enjoyed several upgrades over the next decade. In 2010, the redesign added cruise control, keyless entry, leather upholstery, and a more powerful 2.4-liter engine capable of producing 180 horsepower. A year later, Honda refined the CR-V’s appearance and drastically improved the interior with a modernized layout, stowaway rear seats, and endless storage ideal for hauling a variety of gear. The updates kept coming and, in 2014, the CR-V was once again redesigned. The new modern exterior paved the way for the next round of upgrades in 2016 with bold styling and the latest technology. It also offered drivers multiple powertrain options—1.5-liter, 2.0-liter, 2.4-liter, and the new 1.6-liter turbodiesel—as well as a hybrid option. So, where does that leave the CR-V today?

The Present: 2021 CR-V

The EX-L starts at $30,450¹ and raises the bar of luxury and convenience with its leather interior, power seating, and power tailgate. The Touring model, which starts at $33,650,¹ takes everything one step further with a hands-free power tailgate, wireless phone charging station, and a heated steering wheel. Last, but far from least, is the CR-V Hybrid that delivers an outstanding 212 horsepower and stellar fuel economy.
