A Brief History of the Honda CR-V

Originally released in Japan toward the end of 1995, the Honda CR-V is a compact crossover model that was based on the platform of the Honda Civic. It proved quite popular right away and was revealed for North America in 1996 before going on sale for the 1997 model year. For that first generation, there was a single trim level and engine available for the CR-V, but it made an immediate impression and garnered a lot of attention. There was a facelift and update for the CR-V for the 2000 model year, with a second generation following that and launching with the 2002 model year.

This fully redesigned Honda CR-V continued to be incredibly popular, and it has gone through a wide range of changes in the years since. The second-generation CR-V was updated with a facelift for the 2005 model year, and then it was redesigned for a third generation that started with the 2007 model year. For its first two generations, the CR-V’s rear door opened from the side; starting with the all-new third generation, it received a liftgate, as you would expect from a modern SUV, along with a wide range of other updates.

Following an update and facelift for the CR-V during the 2010 model year, a fourth-generation model was released for 2012 with a full redesign and a more-powerful engine. A facelift for the 2015 model year included an updated exterior and an improved engine that boosted fuel economy for the CR-V. In late 2016 a redesigned fifth-generation Honda CR-V was revealed, and it was released at the end of the year for the 2017 model year, and it was updated for the 2020 model year with a facelift that also introduced a new hybrid engine as an available option.

An all-new sixth generation of the Honda CR-V was unveiled in the summer of 2022 and set for release for the 2023 model year. This generation received a complete redesign that increased the amount of second-row legroom inside, while a hybrid powertrain remains an available option that comes standard on some higher trims. As a comfortable and reliable compact model, the CR-v fits between the smaller HR-V and the larger Passport and Pilot models in Honda’s lineup. This makes it the perfect option for a wide range of drivers looking for SUV functionality that can fit into a modest lifestyle.
