Honda SUVs – Newnan, GA

Many Honda SUVs have played a huge role in the unwavering legacy of one of the most successful Japanese car manufacturers in the world. The category of sport utility vehicles or SUVs has slight differences in meaning depending on which country you are currently in. Even in the auto industry, people could not agree with one universal definition. Generally, SUVs have the capacity of passenger vehicles, are capable of off-road travel, are designed with higher ground clearance, and are powered with four-wheel drive. Here in the United States, SUVs are considered “lights trucks,” resulting in lesser restrictions compared to passenger cars.

Honda started as a motorcycles manufacturer. After the tremendous success of being the world’s best makers of these two-wheeled vehicles, the company expanded to car manufacturing. Since then, the company’s continuous innovations proved itself incredibly resilient up to now. Part of their ingenuity is the production of Honda SUVs among the multitude of their car models. The company kept on expanding and landed in America, and then the popularity of SUVs increased. There are many great reasons why Honda SUVs are considered one of the world’s most popular choices.

Honda SUVs Overview

Instead of the traditional full-size SUVs, the evolution of Honda SUVs summarized into two subcategories of a mid-size and small crossover. According to the respective sizes, we have the Honda Pilot, Honda Passport, Honda CR-V, and Honda HR-V. The company caters to the market need for smaller versions without compromising the general features of an SUV.

For the mid-size subcategory, the Honda Pilot is the foremost model as the largest SUV to offer the customers with a current length of 196.5 inches and width of 78.6 inches. It can comfortably fill-up eight passengers from the three rows of seats. At maximum, the largest cargo volume was behind the first row of seats measuring 109 cubic feet. The 2020 model uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine type, which can provide up to 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of force, enough to tow 5,000 pounds.

If you find the Honda Pilot as impractical due to large build-up, then a shorter mid-size version of Honda SUVs called the Honda Passport is your next best option. Having the same width with Honda Pilot, but a shorter length of 190.5 inches, this less expensive, yet equally stylish model could perfectly fit a typical family taking on a long road trip. Having two rows of seats, it was meant to carry up to five passengers. Behind the first row seat, it can set-up a maximum cargo volume of 100.7 cubic feet. For 2020, it also has the same V6 engine as the Honda Pilot.

If you still have the need for smaller SUVs, yet still bigger than a typical car, then the subcategory of small crossover SUVs, there are two available models, namely the Honda CR-V and Honda HR-V. In terms of length, the Honda CR-V is longer by almost one foot compared to Honda HR-V with respective lengths of 182.1 inches and 170.4 inches. One of the best features of these two small crossover SUVs is that it almost rivals the cargo volume of Honda Pilot and Honda Passport, ranging from 100 to 105 cubic feet capacity. As usual, the models were built with smaller engines of respective mechanical powers of 190 and 141 horsepower.

History of Innovation

The history of Honda SUVs is an inspiring story of never-ending innovation through adversity. From introducing the first originally designed motorcycle in 1949 in Japan, the company’s stellar success proceeded in entering the car market. In 1959, the company later established the American Honda Motor Company in Los Angeles, California. A few years later, in 1969, the company sold its first cars in places like California, Washington, and Oregon.

During the 1990s, the company was caught off-guard to the increasing growth of recreational vehicles such as SUVs. At the time, the company was on the brink of Mitsubishi takeover. To avoid the unwanted scenario, the company seeks partnership with Isuzu; the mid-size SUV Honda Passport started as rebadged Isuzu Rodeo from 1993. The production of the smaller Honda CR-V models also began in 1995 and Honda HR-V in 1999. Then in 2002, the partnership with Isuzu ended to give way to the production of the Honda Pilot.

After those trying times of creating the first generations of Honda SUVs, the company not only survived from being taken over but also grabbed a big portion of the market. In fact, the company achieved a great milestone in manufacturing 100 million units of automobiles. The next generations and trims of SUVs resulted in grander aesthetic design, better engine performance, and more safety features.

Honda SUV Tech

The Honda SUVs’ non-stop innovation leads to one of the most modern technologies in today’s automobile industry. The line-up of the latest generations of 2020 models and beyond comes with the top-notch safety features called Honda Sensing. Access to this technology keeps the driver aware of the surrounding for a safer road trip. To name a few, some of the safety features of Honda Sensing are Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Forward Collision Warning (FCW).

Besides the already mentioned features from the SUVs above regarding engine power and volume capacity, these automobiles also come with built-in entertainment amenities. There is Bluetooth streaming through the so-called HondaLink that allows the hands-free connection of your smartphone. After wireless linking of your smartphone to the SUV, you can then access cloud-based applications as well as your favorite app, including Facebook and Twitter.

A Preview of the 2020 Honda CR-V

What can you expect when you get behind the wheel of a 2020 Honda CR-V? For one, you’ll find a well-rounded Honda SUV that provides not only great performance but a family-friendly driving experience as well. The Honda CR-V offers four simple trim options, which include the LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. What you get in base models of the Honda CR-V is already pretty remarkable, but with some simple upgrading, you can end up with an SUV that manages to do it all and then some.

Performance in the Honda CR-V is led by a 1.5-liter turbo-4 engine that produces 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. This entry-level powertrain shifts its power through the use of a CVT or continuously variable automatic transmission. This Honda SUV can be found with front-wheel or four-wheel drive, and even in base models can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Scattered amongst the Honda CR-V lineup are hybrid variants that can not just boost gas mileage, but can provide a bump to horsepower delivery as well. The Honda CR-V Hybrid draws its power from the combination of a lithium-ion battery, a set of electric motors, and a 2.0-liter inline-4 gas engine. All totaled, this combination adds up to 212 horsepower overall. Base models of the Honda CR-V already have a pretty substantial fuel economy of 30 MPG combined, but hybrid iterations amp that rating up to 38 MPG combined.1

Sit inside the five-seat Honda CR-V, and there will be plenty of room to move about. In the rear row, passengers get to enjoy up to 40 inches of legroom, which resides near the top-end when compared to competitive models. Cargo spacing is also pretty substantial, with the base gas-powered models getting a total of 75.8 cubic feet of cargo room. The hybrid variant does lose some cargo space, but not by much, as these models still provide a substantial 68.7 cubic feet of cargo room. The interior is made up of cloth and soft-touch plastics in low-end trims, whereas genuine leather can be swapped out in the EX-L and Touring.

Speaking of the interior, the Honda CR-V manages to provide many modern amenities, including a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility in the EX trim level. This trim configuration also adds in keyless ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and an upgraded audio system, to name a few premium features. High-tier versions of the Honda CR-V capitalize on this entry-level spread of features, adding in a wireless smartphone charger, and an even more premium audio system.

Safety is where the Honda CR-V certainly excels. All trims of the Honda CR-V find a healthy spread of features, which can be easily upgraded should that be desired. Included in the standard safety package, otherwise known as the Honda Sensing Safety & Driver Assistive Technologies, are features that alert drivers of things that may be missed on the road. A collision mitigation braking system is included in the Honda Sensing suite, which is a feature that’ll automatically apply the brakes if a frontal collision is detected. Adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow is also available in this standard safety package.

A Preview of the 2020 Honda Pilot

If you’re looking for a bigger Honda SUV, the 2020 Honda Pilot may be the model of choice. Offering three rows of seats, this substantial SUV is one of the biggest within the Honda family lineup. You’ll also get a healthy number of trim configurations to choose from, including the LX, EX, EX-L, the Touring, Elite, and the Black Edition.

Peering beneath the hood, no matter which trim you decide to purchase, you’ll be saddled behind a 3.5-liter V6 that’s responsible for 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. This base engine utilizes a 6-speed automatic transmission to channel all of its power, but there is a 9-speed option in higher trims like the Touring, Elite, and Black edition.

The V6 engine is rated to haul up to 5,000 pounds, and when tooled with that sleek 9-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, you can get an EPA-estimated 22 MPG combined.2 In the 6-speed front-wheel model, fuel economy hits a similar range earning 19 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway.2 And speaking of drivetrains, the Honda Pilot provides drivers the option between a simple front-wheel oriented drivetrain and all-wheel drive.

The 2020 Honda Pilot is mightily spacious, providing enough room for up to eight passengers. When you recline the third-row seats, you’ll be able to enjoy 80 cubic feet of cargo room in total, which makes this Honda SUV downright cavernous. Like the Honda CR-V, the Honda Pilot offers 40 inches of legroom in the second row and still manages to offer a worthwhile 32 inches of legroom in the third row. And with plenty of soft-touch plastics and cloth throughout, the Honda Pilot is beyond comfortable.

Features in the Honda Pilot are pretty diverse, with an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with smartphone compatibility found as standard in the Pilot EX. Accompanying this large infotainment screen is a three-zone automatic climate control system, as well as heated seats and two USB charging ports. Upgrade the Honda Pilot, and you’ll find so much more, including a wireless phone charger, a panoramic sunroof, and even a revamped audio system.

In typical Honda fashion, the Honda Pilot comes standard with an abundance of safety tech. No matter which model you decide to purchase, you’ll find advanced safety technology such as lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. All totaled, the Honda Pilot is not just large, but it is an SUV that is capable of providing a truly five-star driving and riding experience.

A Brief History of the Honda SUV

Honda, as an automaker, first broke out onto the scene in 1948 from the island nation of Japan. Honda started out with the development of motorcycles but continually branched out over the years. Eventually, Honda entered the automotive market in 1963. The first Honda SUV was the Honda Passport in 1993. While the initial run of the Honda Passport only lasted between 1993 and 2002, this large SUV had a resurgence into the auto world in 2018 and continues to be a heavy-hitter in its field.

The Honda CR-V came not long after the Honda Passport, first rolling into production in 1995. While the Honda Passport may have faded out of production in 2002, the Honda CR-V has had an uninterrupted run since the release of the first generation. While the models of today and the 90s look very different, many of the foundational characteristics are the same, as both models provide a more compact SUV experience.

The Honda Pilot, on the other hand, is a more recent face within the Honda family lineup, first hitting showrooms in 2002. Like the Honda CR-V, the Honda Pilot has continued to be a success, as manufacturers continue on into the third generation of development. Last but not least is the Honda HR-V. Having first made waves in 1998, this subcompact crossover reached a sudden end of production in 2006. That said, the model was revitalized in 2015 with a completely new face. Today, this model continues to be a staple of the Honda family lineup. While the Honda SUV has changed a lot over the decades, these vehicles continue to innovate what it means to drive a utility vehicle, using the latest tech to elevate the driver experience.
