Would You Rather Drive a Tacoma or a Honda Ridgeline?

The new 2019 Honda Ridgeline and the new 2019 Toyota Tacoma are in the same class, and they have overall similar goals: to be a fun-for-all pickup that can work like a truck but play like a sports car.

There’s some overlap in features and some in performance, but there’s a lot that sets these two trucks apart.

The Tacoma puts a heavy emphasis on a solid build and an affordable price, but the trade-off is a rockier, less-comfortable ride and a spartan interior at the lower trim levels. This truck starts at $25,550.

The new Honda Ridgeline is geared toward a more fun-loving audience. Its AWD system is lighter and more oriented toward daily commuter performance, and its well-equipped cabin gives you a lot for the price. This truck starts at $29,990*.

Truck Performance: Mature or Mighty?

Remember that Tacoma dedication to affordability? Part of its cheaper starting price is thanks to its base engine: which is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. That’s less powerful than Toyota’s 2019 Camry–by more than 40 horsepower. So, you’ll get a pickup truck for less than $26,000, but it won’t be able to outrun your great-aunt’s Church car.

The Tacoma does offer another engine option, of course: a 278-horsepower V6. But, it pushes the price way up and it’s still not as powerful as the Honda Ridgeline‘s standard engine.

The 2019 Honda Ridgeline boasts 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque from a standard 3.5-liter V6 engine that you’ll find on every model in the lineup.

Honda Ridgeline vs Toyota Tacoma

It’s not all about brawn, sure. But, the Honda Ridgeline also offers an amazing range of features and exclusive equipment–like a waterproof and lockable in-bed storage compartment, an in-bed integrated stereo system, and a dual-action tailgate–that the Tacoma’s GoPro mount and possible pricey Wi-Fi connection just can’t match.
